ALTAGAMMA LAUNCHES ITS FIRST REPORT ON TOP WINES INDUSTRY

TheAltagamma Top Wine Study, the first extensive report on the worldwide top wine consumption and the companies strategies for the growth, will be presented Wednesday, May 9th at Seeds&Chips, in Milan. The study is conducted by Altagamma in collaboration with EY - Parthenon.

First insights are coming from an interview-based research focused on international Michelin-Starred restaurants, a privileged channel for the knowledge and consumption of high-end wines.

The interview process has involved 400 Michelin-Starred restaurants (out of the existing 2700), 40% of which boasting 2+ stars, with an average turnover of €3 million, in 8 countries (Italy, France, Germany, UK, Switzerland, USA, China, Japan). The average price per person at the restaurants in the panel ranges between €80 and €150 (wine excluded), with an average price per bottle of wine of  €100 in the 54% of the cases, and a list of more than 200 wines.

70% of restaurants expect solid growth (>20%) in the next 2-3 years, 30% of which led by wine. The increase of wine consumption is therefore considered a crucial driver of the growth in the turnover of high-end restaurants.

Almost 50% of the restaurants envisage an upsurge in the total wine consumption, mainly due to the increasing number of consumers, rather than to the increasing consumption per person.

Consumption growth is expected to be driven by the medium-high price range, where one out of two bottles is priced above €100.

Finally, the study shows that in their interactions with suppliers and distributors, restaurants give the highest value to efficient storytellingand a proactive stream of news, both on the brands and the products. These elements facilitate not only the selection of wines, but also the relation with the end-consumer.
